Over the last thirty years, the motorbike industry has seen a shift in its buyers, from younger to older purchasers. Today's motorbike rider, at least for the street-legal machinery, is no longer the young rebel put out with the world, but a solid middle-class citizen. Men and women alike ride now, and the machinery is as beautiful and expensive as their money will buy. From the days of the chopped Harley to the more sophisticated magnificent Harley XR1200, as just one single manufacturer example, the industry has grown right alongside its buyers. Bikes for personal use sit in their garages alongside the family car.

A company like Harley, founded in 1902, born in Milwaukee, WI, USA, has been there from the beginning -- producing bikes for personal use. Producing innovative products was their signature pastime, and in fact, some 80,000 of their W series (started in 1928) were shipped overseas in WWII, spreading the Harley name far and wide in the process. They have paralleled their engineering advantage into designing since some of the world's great bikes. Harley isn't the only manufacturer to do so, of course, and there is an excellent history of the world's great bikes. No matter your favourite brand, its place in history is defined there. Engineering changes throughout the decades have now produced rides that exceed anything you've seen or experienced before. The successful companies have not only kept up with their markets, but defined new markets and made new and better bikes to appeal to just about every market niche imaginable.

Bikes have now become personal. If you've made the decision to ride, shopping for one can be fun. Every single detail can be personalized in today's market. If you've estimated what you can pay, and have your budget set, go to a local dealer or shop the net for a bike you might want to try. Find out how you can try a bike, many dealers have access to riding ranges where you can learn to ride, or discover new ways to ride more safely. As a rider, the better trained you are, the more enjoyable owning your bike will be. Most bike companies also have associated motorbike insurance, so check the deals that they offer for the best buy.
