There are endless reasons for links. One way to connect with more information about something is to put a link in a document. If a writer wants to make different info available to alternating search engines they can do it with links. Sometimes a link will take you to the same exact document only in another language. Another usage would be to point someone to the same stuff in another type of media. So instead of watching a video about something you can see still pictures and read the print.
This is why it is important to have a complete understanding of HTML before trying to produce links. Linking is all done via the computer language HTML, and it is the way of telling information to the site, servers, and search engines letting them know where you want your links to go and what language you want your text in. Being able to communicate with anyone, you must speak their language. Using your computer is the same premise. You must understand computer language in order to effectively communicate with it.
