With well-publicized ice and snow storms occurring across the country, the winter of 2009 has proven to be both harsh and erratic. Although winter weather can be picturesque, this increased moisture – from both the precipitation and the subsequent melt - can lead to increased pest infestations as rodents and outdoor pests seek food, water and shelter from the elements, many times in homes.
“With many areas having experienced unusually severe winter weather and increased moisture, there will likely be a significant increase in pest infestations," said Greg Baumann, senior scientist for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). "Such infestations can pose serious threats to well-being of homeowners and their properties. If facing a pest problem, whether winter-related or not, it is critical for homeowners to select and work with a licensed pest professional who can not only provide a solution for the pest problem but also provide homeowners with peace of mind. ”
The NPMA offers homeowners these tips for selecting a pest professional:
Ask friends/neighbors to recommend pest control companies they have used successfully
If a sizable investment is involved, solicit bids from several pest management firms.
Never rush a decision. You are paying for professional knowledge - Hire someone whose judgment you can trust.
Before signing a contract, be sure to fully understand the nature of the pest, the extent of the infestation, and the work necessary to solve the problem.
If a guarantee is given, know what it covers, how long it lasts, what you must do to keep it in force, and what kind of continuing control, prevention and management are necessary.
Buy value, not price. Beware of bargains that sound too good to be true – Typically, they are.
