If you are thinking of creating your own digital recordings, the first
thing I would tell you is you don’t need to waste your money on a
studio-quality microphone. I think the best thing for you to do is to go
to your local electronics store and pick up a USB headset microphone
that plugs into a USB port on your computer. Don’t get the one that
plugs into the little microphone jack because then it goes through your
sound card and the sound quality diminishes.
The next thing you need to do is buy some audio editing software. I use
Sony Sound Forge for all my recordings. It’s an excellent product that
produces great sound quality.
When you’re creating your recording, you’ve got to be very clear with
where you want to go with it. Try to follow some kind of organized game
plan. That’s exactly what I do, whether I’m creating an ebook or
anything else, I first lay everything out, organize my thoughts and
attempt to create some kind of logical sequence. Try to break up your
recordings into sections of specific topics.
One thing you always want to emphasize is what gives you the right to
talk about what you’re about to talk about. What makes you credible? The
reason I say this is because some people might not know you or they need
to be reminded about your background. If they already know you, that’s
fine, but you should always restate who you are and why you qualify to
talk about a certain topic. Once you’ve done that, the next thing is to
outline to your listeners what you will be discussing on that particular
recording. Say something like, “Here’s what I’ll be discussing in the
next 60 minutes.” Then explain each point. A lot of people like it when
you say, “Here’s the five things that I’m going to talk about,” “The
five ways to make this happen,” “Three ways to make this happen.” So try
to organize your topics like that throughout your recordings. But the
most important thing is that you provide good content.
