Meta tags define the properties of each page you create on your website.
They, along with keywords tell the search engines what a particular page
is all about. So, you want to make sure you add these to all your pages
to have them properly indexed. If you aren’t sure if your pages already
have these in place all you need to do is right click on a given page
and select “properties”. This will show you exactly what the search
engines see. Changing or editing these Meta tags or keywords can be done
very easily in any html editor such as FrontPage, Nvu or Dreamweaver.
How important are Meta tags?
If you had listened to me at one of my seminars five years ago, I
probably said, “Yeah, you want to do something with meta tags.” And then
probably a couple of years later, I said, “No meta tags, they’re a waste
of time.” Well, meta tags have come back. I’m starting to notice that
Google is actually using them a lot more than they ever have.
So, the first thing that’s really important on your page is the title of
your page. It’s extremely important. Also, your description and your
keyword tag. With meta tags, description tags and your keyword tags, you
want to make sure you don’t stuff too many keywords into them. However,
you do want to have some. Try to keep it to maybe two or three keyword
phrases in your title tag, maybe no more than 83 characters.
In your page description, I realized something that most people don’t
realize. It doesn’t matter the order in which you place your words. I
could still rank pretty high for “internet marketing” whether that term
was in my meta tag or any other tag. So, in your page description you
can hide different keywords in there.
So how do you search and find the appropriate meta tags?
Well, first of all, you don’t search and you don’t go out there to
select appropriate meta tags. I think anybody looking for certain
keyword searches that way is dead wrong. So let’s think about this from
a logical perspective.
If you have already built your site, what I tell everybody to do if they
don’t have any keyword tags, title tags, description tags, or keyword
tags is not to worry. What you need to do is some pay per click
advertising, CPV or some other paid way to get traffic to your site. The
reason I say this is because while you’re doing your paid advertising
you want to find out which keywords you’re getting the most opt-ins
from. Every single piece of traffic that I’m getting from my paid
advertising, I’m sending to a squeeze page. So if I drive all the
traffic to the squeeze page and I’m capturing those people there, well,
then they’re going to automatically land on a sales letter. That’s how I
do it.
So there are two things that I’m going to learn. First of all, by
sending my traffic through pay per click to my opt-in page, I’m going to
find out which words are getting the most clicks. I’m also going to find
out which words are converting the most to opt-ins. I’m also going to
discover which words are turning into the most buyers. Well, guess what?
If you want to start optimizing your site for specific words, this is
the best way to do it. I personally use this strategy and it works
remarkably well. What I do is I go and I look at what words are actually
converting the best. Then I optimize my site for those words. So those
would be the words I would use in my keyword tags. Those would be the
words that I would optimize my title tag for. Those would also be the
words that I would want to put in my page description. I want to find
the words that are actually giving me results, not the ones I’m pulling
out of somewhere else. My view is, why don’t we figure out which words
are actually getting us opt-ins and then optimize my site for based on
that. Once I start getting some buyers, I’ll then be able to find out
which keywords people are buying from, and then I’ll be able to optimize
even further.
Also, if you’re going to get this technical with things, it’s really
important to put keywords inside the H1 and H2 tags. How do you do that?
Well, in your html editor, highlight the word and select H1 or H2 tags
in the task bar. Make sure you try out these strategies to see how well
they work for you. They have worked really well for me. Remember,
testing and tracking is key to understanding and improving your business
for greater profits!
