In the US and many other countries, childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic. Childhood obesity is a serious issue because children who are overweight and obese are more likely to develop a variety of serious diseases. You don't have to simply stand by and watch your overweight or obese child suffer. You can do many things to help his or her situation. Below are suggestions on how you can help your child be more active and at a healthy weight.

Often it's simply a matter of finding the right kind of activity to help get your child be more active. Although children can benefit from participating in sports, admittedly not all children will find sports a good fit for them.

If they are overweight, they may not be coordinated or athletic enough for traditional sports. This doesn't mean, however, that there aren't activities that would be appropriate for them. Look into all of the activities offered at your child's school or that are given locally. This might include gymnastics, swimming, martial arts or organizations such as the boy or girl scouts. When your child does express any kind of interest in a pursuit that involves physical activity, be sure to encourage it.

It's crucial that you educate yourself on nutrition if your goal is to help your child get to a healthy weight. When you become knowledgeable on nutrition, you're actually going to help not just your child, but your whole family. This goes beyond just counting calories. It has to do with learning about nutritional requirements and which foods are healthy and which are not. So when you're out shopping for groceries, you can apply the knowledge you've gained by reading the labels. It's important that you make it a habit to read food labels because you can't simply go by claims made by companies that their products are healthy. Moreover, you need to be able to estimate the calorie or fat content of fast food so your child can be guided accordingly.

Out of frustration, some parents end up addressing their children's problem in a negative way. Piling insults or criticisms on your child isn't going help him or her get to a healthy weight. The only thing this will do is lower your child's self-esteem. It's much better for your child if he or she sees you being positive and encouraging. Praise your child whenever you see him or her being active or eating healthy food. If you want to modify your child's behavior, you'll be more successful if you do so constructively. Your child needs to understand why exactly it is important that he or she gets regular exercise and eat a healthy diet. Encourage kids to eat better and exercise by coming up with rewards that don't involve food, such as a fun outing.

To sum it up, many ways exist that can help children not become overweight or obese. One thing you can do as a parent is educate yourself on proper nutrition and health. Work with your child's doctor if your child has a weight problem. The things we've shared here can get you started in helping your child get on the road to good health.
