Even though we would love our refrigerators to last forever, they will not. There will come a time in every household when your HVAC technician tells you that your refrigerator cannot be repaired. Your HVAC technician has had extensive training in refrigeration technologies and is more than qualified to give you a sound recommendation. In this case, you should trust the professionals, but what do you do when your refrigerator finally sees its end?

To be able to make the best decision for your situation, you need to have a bit of training in refrigeration technologies. You basically have three options: Buy a used one, buy a new one or rent one. How do your choose what will be the best choice for you? All the options have pros and cons.

Renting a refrigerator

This might seem like a good choice for many people, but is it the right choice for you? You do not have to lay out a large sum of cash all at once. If something goes wrong with the refrigerator, you can call to get someone in to fix it at no cost to you. This is a great option for you if you do not want to ever see repair bills. It is more or less the same as renting a car, you will have a monthly payment to make, but you will never own it.

Buying used refrigerators

You might be able to get a really good deal on a used refrigerator, but you never have the peace of mind that it will not cause you problems in the future. You could end up spending tons of money on repairs to your used refrigerator over the next few years, even months. You could end up paying more for a used refrigerator than if you had have bought a new one. It is not really possible to take a look at the refrigeration circuit before you buy, unless you take the entire refrigerator apart. It can be a huge risk buying a used refrigerator, because you have no idea how long it will actually last.

If you do choose to buy a used refrigerator, try to avoid buying one that has existing problems. Do not think that a minor repair will stay that, it will more likely just lead to you to discover other problems that it has. Make sure before you buy a used refrigerator that you check that the gaskets are secure, that the doors close correctly and that the walls and doors are not damaged. Cracks in the walls or doors will result in cold air escaping and that means that you will be paying higher electrical bills.

Buying a new refrigerator

This is most likely the best option if you are looking to avoid problems, but you will need to lay out a large sum of cash upfront. It will be a while before you will need to make repairs, but if anything happens while it is still under warranty, it will be fixed or replaced at no additional cost. This is not the case once your warranty has lapsed though, then you will be liable to pay the cost of any repairs. When you buy a new refrigerator, you have the flexibility to choose one of the latest styles to fit in with your unique decor. You might not have this choice if you choose a used or rented refrigerator.

Everyone has different needs as far as refrigerator repairs and maintenance are concerned. It all boils down to how much you can afford to pay, if you want to pay a monthly installment or if you want to pay everything upfront.
