The Following is an excerpt from my marketing blog, ImFilthyRich.com - The Fast Track to Making Money Online
Building a proper web-presence is key to anyone serious about their business. We've all seen them... you know, the web sites that are off-centered and in all caps along with several scattered animated GIF's taunting you all the way to File > Exit in your browser menu--and to think, these people are trying to SELL YOU SOMETHING!
Getting a web site online is a fairly easy task. Programs like Dreamweaver and Front Page can make anyone feel like they have mastered the art, but there are a few simple things to keep in mind.
Domain Name:
A domain name is your address on the internet. Your domain name should in some way represent your business and something that is relatively easy to remember. Studies have shown that most people are more likely to remember DOTCOM (.com) addresses versus other TLD's such as .net, .org, .biz, etc. Domain names are significantly cheaper than they were in the old days you can score one here at GoDaddy.com for as little as $1.99.
Design:
The look of your site is VERY important. If you have no experience in designing web sites then I highly recommend your hire someone to do it. There is a common misconception that hiring designers has to be an expensive and lengthy ordeal and it can be... but luckily it doesn't have to be. I've purchased many full sites on sites like ScriptLance.com for less than $45... Some as little as $15.
Hosting:
The last real step to getting your website online is choosing a web-host. Web Hosts essentially sell web real estate in which you set up shop on. GoDaddy.com offers some competitive prices, check them out here.
Does your website feel secure? Your website needs to look professional and inviting. No one in their right mind would trust your product if the site itself is shady. Remember, this web site is an extension of you and your personality. How would you want to be percieved?
Until this point, most everything I have discussed has been commonplace for most of you; now its time for the meat of this lesson. A web-presence doesn't stop with your graphics or domain... It needs to dig much deeper.
Promotion Ideas:
First off, you need to start breathing your business. Ask any successful online entrepreneur and they'll all tell you the same. Promote, Promote, Promote. What good is having a fancy website if no one is ever going to see it? GET THE WORD OUT.
Place a link everywhere you can. Email often? Put a link to your site in your signature. Frequent message boards or forums? Get that link in there.
For example, for this website I have printed out Business Cards, Signs and Flyers. I got the sign idea from seeing all of the election signs accross my city. It seems no matter how many signs I pass it's like my eyes instantly look at every one of them. My signs read ImFilthyRich.com, The Fast Track to Striking it Rich Online.
As for the business cards, I try to get atleast two of them on EVERY bulletin-board I see. You can find a lot of bulletin-boards on college campuses, Walmarts, Fitness Centers, restaurants - I've had a lot of success from a local Wendy's. The idea here is to get a lot of eyes on your link and in some cases, offline ads like these can be more effective than your online ones.
Flyers can be a cheap way to spread the word. When marketing one of my other websites I hired my cousin and his friend to flyer my local shopping mall, college campus, mini-malls and department store parking lots. With a total investment of $50 in black & white flyers I generated $3000 worth of sales that weekend.
You're best bet is to do your flyers at a local office supplies store and your signs at a local print shop. You can get 250 High Quality Business Cards for $24.99 or 2,000 for $99.96 at PsPrint.
