A credit does not always have to constitute a princely sum. For more modest expenditure, such as a new stereo system or a replacement washing machine, a small loan is quite sufficient. With the advent of cheap flights it is also a viable way of funding a short break and discovering a new corner of our green Earth all for one’s self: a corner like Keswick in the English Lake District.
Keswick lies within the Lake District National Park around 130 km away from Manchester airport which is probably the best point of entry for overseas visitors. It takes about two hours from there to reach Keswick. The town is located on the shores of Derwent Water, in the northern part of the park, and enjoys a sublime view across to the mountains. Many lakes in Cumbria end in –mere or are called Water. Smaller pools are called Tarns. The largest body of water is Windermere 15 km south of Keswick. It is the largest lake in all England and stretches fully 17km from one end to the other.
The National Park is contained entirely within Cumbria, whose northern border marks the boundary between England and Scotland. The name of the town Keswick is derived from kese-wic which suggests that a cheese market was once held there. Today Keswick is known more for its annual beer festival. Every year more than 5000 keen beer fans descend on the town to indulge their beery thirsts. Over 300 varieties of ale, lager and cider are available and the town sets up a music stage so that various live bands can entertain those passing back and forth between brewery tents. By way of contrast, Keswick also hosts an annual Film Festival (not at the same time of year). This is supported by public funds and presents a variety of lesser known British and European productions.
The 175 year history of the humble pencil is celebrated in Keswick’s world famous Cumberland Pencil Museum. From over two hundred years ago until the recent past graphite was mined in the hills around Keswick. The invention of the pencil was really a by-product of this industry but one of which the whole town is justly proud. The museum not only houses the world’s largest pencil but is also a veritable treasure trove of information and exhibits pertaining to this most environmentally friendly of writing implements. The museum shop also offers an imaginative range of souvenir pencils for sale.
But most visitors to Keswick are less interested in beer and films (and even pencils) than in the stunning scenery that surrounds the town. They use Keswick as a base from which to explore an area considered by many to be England’s most beautiful. The lake poet Coleridge certainly thought so: he made Keswick his home for many years. This begs the question: if he enjoyed the views over Derwent water over so many years why can’t anybody else just pencil in a weekend for a short break?
