If you are planning to change your career then you have to change your resume. There will be a large number of people who were seeking the same job. In order to get yourself noticed you have to choose a format for your resume that the employer prefers. The following steps may help you to write a resume for career change.
1. First you have to decide about the change, whether you want a drastic change from your present career or you want a change in the same route.
2. You must know about the skills and capabilities, requirements that the new job demands from you. You will get these information from the lob listing sites, newspaper etc.
3. Once you get the idea about the skills that you need to enter, and then make a list on your own. The list must include your skills, responsibilities and achievements in the past ten years. Now compare the requirements of the companies and your skills and find out the matching ones.
4. Rewrite your old resume by highlighting the matching skills and achievements so that you can apply for the new career. The focus of your resume must be in such a way to catch the attention of the employer. It is always better to make a resume in functional format or in combination format. This is because in these formats you can give more vehemence on the work that you have done instead of the dates, employer etc.
5. There are many skills that are transferable irrespective of where ever you work. The employer will look in to such qualities first and they are leadership ability, communication skill, negotiation skill, team player, ability to solve problems, ability to motivate others etc.
6. If you received any honors, awards etc then highlight it in your resume only if it associates with your new career track.
7. If you have any experience in your past and that matches with the companies profile then highlight them. Also include your hobbies, volunteer work, internships etc in your resume.
