Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Headlines S-Class Range And New Sub-brand
Published: 06th February 2017
The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class heralds the return of the Maybach badge to the Stuttgart-based automaker's fold as a sub-brand, in much the same way as does the Mercedes-AMG performance division.
Mercedes is aiming Maybach at the growing customer desire for high-margin luxury vehicles. And the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class at the likes of super luxury saloons such as the Bentley Flying Spur and Rolls-Royce Ghost.
Available in the Hong Kong market as the V8-powered S 500 and V12-powered S 600 models, the Mercedes-Maybach is about prestige, exclusivity and style-forming presence.
The exterior of the Mercedes-Maybach is one of visual confidence, designed to represent performance and success. The name alone is positioned to embody maximum exclusivity. Lending in no small way to the vehicle's prestigious presence are the distinctive bonnet and clearly defined headlamps, the radiator grille with three twin louvres and vertical chrome bar of the front and at the rear, the chrome-plated twin louvre and two chrome-plated tailpipes.
Not to forget the Maybach emblem on the C-pillar and the seven letters themselves on the rear. The rear doors are also of a new design.
Mercedes describes the spacious interior - thanks to the Mercedes-Maybach's additional 207 mm over the long-wheelbase S-Class - as "a successful blend between a luxurious wellness atmosphere and a harmonious work environment."
There are silver-plated champagne flutes available as an option. Bespoke wood trim and hand-stitched leather on the door panels are among the Maybach-exclusive features.
Hailed by some as the benchmark big luxury saloon, the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is by no doubt an impressively luxurious car that is comprehensively equipped, distinctively- styled and generously spacious.
Deserving special attention are the two Executive seats in the rear, which can be moved into a comfortable reclining position at the touch of a button. The height and fore-and-aft position of the head restraints can be adjusted, as can the backrest and seat cushion angles. Likewise freely adjustable for length and angle are the leg-rests. Combine the leg-rest and heel support elements and the result is a comfortable Mercedes bed-on-the-go.
The First Class Rear Compartment option allows for transformation of the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class into a travelling office, complete with a business console that extends from the centre console in the front to the parcel shelf. There's a stowage compartment with two 12-Volt sockets, tempered cupholders and optionals such as business telephony with handset, a coolbox and two folding tables that create a work desk.
The Individual Entertainment option for the rear serves up some impressive visual and audio goodies, not least of all two 25.4 cm displays on the rear of the front seats and wireless headphones which can be operated individually. For each seat there's access to the DVD player, internet, radio and - in conjunction with an optional TV tuner - TV.
Not enough? Two USB slots and analogue AUX-in jack in the rear seat armrest enable the use of other external audio and video sources such as an iPod®, iPad® and games consoles.
Then there's the optional Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system, with 24 amplifier channels and 24 high-performance speakers, five sound presets, Dolby® Digital 5.1/DTS, Subwoofer Bassbox in the boot and VIP seating position function for sound optimization for individual seats.
The Burmester® surround sound system is another option for the Mercedes-Maybach S 500, while it's standard in the S 600. This comprises 13 high-performance speakers, 9-channel DSP amplifier and Dolby Digital® 5.1/DTS.
Standard in both models is the ambient lighting package, which has seven colours and five dimming levels to help create the desired lighting mood. The standard panoramic sunroof, with its large glazed areas, can make for a particularly bright interior ambience and add to the feeling of spaciousness in the cabin.
Available only for the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 is the optional panoramic sliding sunroof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, a feature through which the transparent roof switches to light or dark at the push of a button.
Standard for the S 600 and optional for the S 500, the AIR BALANCE package features a choice of up to five interior fragrances. The package comes with the (exclusive to the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class) AGARWOOD fragrance, with the other four fragrances of NIGHTLIFE MOOD, DOWNTOWN MOOD, SPORTS MOOD and FREESIDE MOOD available as accessories.
Standard for both Mercedes-Maybach models is the Chauffeur package. This further increases the comfort level in the cabin's rear, with more legroom made possible by electronically moving the front passenger seat forward by an additional 77 mm and a heel support that extends from under that same seat.
Other standard equipment and features for both models includes EASY ADJUST luxury head restraints for the driver and front passenger, THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control and the sun protection package with electrically operated roller sun blinds for the rear window and rear side windows.
Optional for the S 500 and standard in the S 600 is the seat comfort package for the driver and front passenger. These active multicontour seats have inflatable air chambers, drive dynamic function and an ENERGIZING massage function based on the principle of a relaxing hot-stone massage.
Mercedes proudly touts the superior ride comfort of the Mercedes-Maybach, thanks to the innovative suspension and damping systems. This is in the form of the AIRMATIC with continuously-variable damping system in the S 500 which can be set for more comfortable or sporty characteristics and automatically lowers the vehicle at higher speeds, and MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system (standard in the S 600 and optional for the S 500) which uses a camera to scan the road ahead so damping can be optimally adapted.
As one would expect, the Mercedes-Maybach employs a bevy of safety and driver assistance systems including ATTENTION ASSIST, ADAPTIVE BRAKE, BAS Brake Assist, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Acceleration skid control (ASR), Crosswind Assist, windowbags, front and rear sidebags and front airbags.
