No matter how much dealers tell you they've "changed the customer experience" and how many dealerships advertise that they have a strict "no haggling" policy, dealerships remain pretty strange places. The used car lot may be the strangest of all.

You are entering hostile territory. You can fully expect a man wearing too much cologne to come up to you and say, "What do I have to do to earn your business today?" Your most basic questions will go unanswered. Salesman will suddenly appear and just as suddenly vanish. Sometimes it will seem impossible to get accomplish something simple...like finding the keys so you can test drive a car you're actually interested in buying.

Maintain a Zen calm amidst the fluttering banners of used car dealerships.

So take it all in, but don't let it affect you. It's good to take a trusted friend or spouse, so you can take a sanity break whenever it gets too weird. Whatever bizarre things the salesmen may try, focus on your mission: sitting in cars, test-driving cars, learning about prices.
