Wimp vs Warrior - Who's sitting on your shoulders?

By: Rachel Young | Posted: 18th November 2006

Sometimes my husband and I joke about the folks sitting on our shoulders. Its never been a question of angel or devil, but more of wimp or warrior. And when we were just starting out, that made all the difference in the world!

Everyone's seen or heard about the angel and devil sitting on someone's shoulder, advising them on what to do next. But if you are firm in your core beliefs, temptation's not really a problem. However, as an entrepreneur and newbie investor, I had to fight between two other entities on my shoulders - the wimp and the warrior.

See, the wimp was the one who sat on my shoulder and said, ?You can't do this. You don't have the ability or the guts to make it in something like this. You're living in the basement of someone else's house, the government is paying for your family's food, and you will never amount to anything more than white trash.? I fought with this guy all the time. Sometimes he won. Sometimes I won. It depended on who wanted to win more that day.

The warrior was someone that I had to get to know better. He'd sit on my shoulder and say, ?You can do this! You're the best at what you do and no one can do it better! If the seller doesn't want to sign the contract, its alright! The next guy will and you'll make even more than you would have with this guy! Don't give up. I believe in you!?

The warrior and I fought as well. Some days he believed in me a lot more than I believed in myself. I waged constant battles between the wimp and the warrior, each telling me what I couldn't believe at the time. It was a continuous struggle between winning and losing. I felt like I was never more than one thought away from either breaking through to real success or the entire place going up in flames due to my inadequacies.

Some days I would say to my husband, ?The wimp is really kicking the warrior's butt today? and we'd sit down and talk about what was going on and why I felt that way. It helped a lot. Other days I felt like the queen of the world (or at least the queen of Georgia) and could get a signed contract from every seller I met. It all depended on who was stronger that morning when I woke up: the wimp or the warrior.

I would encourage you to find a mentor who can help you over these types of hurdles. When you're just starting out, you'll be faced with a lot of doubt and insecurities. It's alright. It happens to the best of us. Having someone to go to in order to get that little boost in confidence that you need in order to buy more houses can make all the difference in the world. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you face off against your wimp.

And when the warrior takes control, don't be afraid to let him!
