The Easy Way to Wed: A Simple Bride's Guide to LDS Wedding Dresses and Invitations

By: Danielle White | Posted: 18th November 2006

An LDS bride has a few extra things on her plate. In addition to finding the perfect dress for herself and her bridesmaids, she has to make sure those dresses are completely modest, no mean feat with today’s fashions. And how can she word the invitation so as not to offend anyone? There’s so much to think about, but those two issues just got a little easier. Read on to learn more about how to simply and easily find your LDS wedding dress, LDS bridesmaid dress, LDS temple invitation wording and sealing cards for your temple wedding invitation.

LDS wedding dress:
After you make your sealing appointment, you should receive a packet of instructions from the temple as to your wedding gown. Most importantly, whether you plan on wearing your gown for your actual sealing ceremony or not, an LDS wedding dress must have sleeves and a modest neckline and be at least knee-length.
If you plan to wear your gown for your sealing, your LDS wedding dress must also have long sleeves or sleeve inserts on your dress. It should be white and reach at least your ankle. The temple recommends comparing your dress to a sheet of paper to be sure it’s white enough. Many temples, especially in Utah, also require that the neckline of your dress be high enough to cover your collarbones and will provide inserts to make you dress suitable. Colored decorations, sequins, elaborate ornamentation and long, unbustled trains are also inappropriate for sealing ceremonies.
Additionally, your veil and headpiece should not be worn for the sealing. The temple has no facilities to accommodate hairdressers, so fix your hair before the ceremony with your veil and headpiece and have your hairdresser remove them carefully. Make sure your hairdresser instructs someone who will be with you at the temple on how to replace the veil and headpiece without messing up your hair.

LDS bridesmaid dress:
Like an LDS wedding dress, an LDS bridesmaid dress can be a challenge, especially if some or all of your bridesmaids are endowed. Many brides want all of their bridesmaids to have an LDS bridesmaid dress whether or not they themselves have been endowed. Like an LDS wedding dress, an LDS bridesmaid dress should have sleeves and a modest neckline and be at least knee length.
Many temples state in the packet of information that they send to you that it is not appropriate for your bridesmaids to wear formal bridesmaid dresses in the sealing ceremony and/or on temple grounds. Out of respect for the holiness of the temple, try to adhere to whatever guidelines your temple provides you with. If you are allowed to and choose to have your bridesmaids wear their formal dresses at the temple, it would be respectful to make sure they have LDS bridesmaid dresses.

LDS temple invitation:
An LDS temple invitation can be tricky. One popular wording option is:
Ricardy and Janet Banks
invite you to celebrate the marriage of their daughter
Penelope Marie
to Johnathan Louis Bauer,
son of Scott Cleveland and Maria Oaks,
Saturday, the eighteenth day of July, two thousand and seven,
from six to nine in the evening
at the Banks residence,
6246 Scarsdale Road,
Poughkeepsie, New York.
Marriage solemnized in the
New York Manhattan Temple of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Alternatively, you can announce your wedding in the temple in the first portion of the invitation (instead of the reception) and request the honor of your guests’ presence at receptions or open houses in the second portion. Most LDS temple invitations do not include the time of the wedding, as only those actually invited to the sealing are expected to attend.

Temple wedding invitation:
The temple wedding invitation should also include a separate card for those invited to the sealing ceremony itself. This card in a temple wedding invitation should include the time of the ceremony as well as a reminder that guests should arrive half an hour early. Double check to make sure the cards are included in the temple wedding invitations. You don’t want to leave anyone out!
With these easy tips, you can find your LDS wedding dress, LDS bridesmaid dress, LDS wedding invitation and temple wedding invitation sealing cards to make your big day perfect!
