DIRECT FLIGHTS TO ERCAN
By: robertkeny | Posted: 17th September 2009
Cyprus is a beautiful island with a exceptional landscape of mountains, plains and beaches. The sandy beaches extend for miles here. Cyprus is the most easterly of the Mediterranean islands and the third largest in the area after Sicily and Sardinia in the Mediterranean. The geography of North Cyprus is characterized by a distinctive mix of mountains, plains, and beaches. The Kyrenia mountain range, with its magnificent serrated limestone peaks, runs along most of the northern coastline. The best beaches of Cyprus can be found to the east of the island, the narrow peninsula known as Karpas, or `The Panhandle'.
Ercan International Airport is the main airport of entry into Cyprus. It is situated east of the Cypriot capital city of Nicosia near the village of Tymvou and it is not internationally recognized as a legal port of entry except by Turkey and the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
There are several airlines that operate from the UK to North Cyprus. These airlines include: Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Sun Express , Atlas Jet, Onur Air, etc
Cyprus Turkish Airlines (CTA) operates direct flights to Ercan, the airport in North Cyprus, from the United Kingdom but flights stop at Turkey for an hour en-route. The price of a return flight from UK to North Cyprus starts at £189 but, like most airlines, when all the seats at this fare, higher fares apply. Details of days of operation are given below.* Direct does not mean non-stop Flights to North Cyprus actually stop in Turkey en-route to North Cyprus but passengers stay on the same aircraft through to Cyprus.
Pegasus Airlines started operating flights from Stansted to Ercan in March 2007. They depart Stansted every Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri and Sundays through the winter and daily from 25 March. Flights stop at Istanbul en route to North Cyprus.
Prices increase as the flights get fuller and prices started at £135 return, but most dates the cheapest fares are now sold. Meals are not included in the fares.
Sun Express , Atlas Jet, Onur Air have operated services from UK to North Cyprus in the past but currently do not operate such a service nor are there any plans for them to do so.
Turkish Airlines operate daily services to North Cyprus from Stansted, Manchester, Heathrow, five times a week from Birmingham and twice a week from Dublin. A change of aircraft is necessary at Istanbul.
The connections from Manchester are good 3 days a week but a longer wait is necessary other days. Connections from Heathrow are OK as shown
Turkish Airlines have competitive prices to Ercan.
An alternative to flying to North Cyprus is to fly to Larnaca in South Cyprus and ask a friend or take a taxi to North Cyprus. The extra driving time on the ground (45 mins) is saved by using a non-stop flight.
