Digital Printing FAQs
By: Nancy Cato | Posted: 21st September 2009
This article deals with a few frequently asked questions by both printers and customers about Digital Printing. Today designers are more than happy that they can use digital printing with a four colour option which gives them better pictures and better quality. Better quality printing paper has also improved the digital printing quality.
Let’s take a look at a few FAQs
Qs.1 What quality of printing will I get with Digital Printing?
Ans: Digital Printing is very different from conventional presses like offset printing. Digital printers use toners whereas offset printing uses ink. Toner based digital printing has a slightly shinier look then offset, but with today’s technology you really can’t tell the difference between the two.
Qs.2 Can I choose the paper for my printing?
Ans: Yes. You can choose any paper that you want as long as the printing company agrees that it will work well on the digital press and give you the best quality possible. Printing companies are not restrictive as long as the paper can be printed by their available machinery.
Qs.3 Can I use different kinds of paper for the same job?
Ans: This answer depends upon your printing company as they must have the equipment to accommodate different papers at one time. But yes if you require it, it can be done. The NexPress 2100 can accommodate up to 3 types of paper but any more than that the company needs to have that equipment.
Qs.4 What about Pantone Colours?
Ans: Now most digital printing machines convert Pantone Colours to the CMYK equivalents so that they can be printed that way. Some presses allow you to specify your own combination or conversion formula and since converting Pantone colours to CMYK colours is an offset technique you may not have any problems.
Qs.5 What is the best way to proof my job?
Ans: Proofing is done in the usual manner which involves a high quality desktop inkjet printer. If you want to be completely sure then you can ask the printing company to proof the job on the same machine as the one that will do the job. Digital printers unlike offset printers can print a few copies before you finalise anything.
Qs.6 How small can the text be and still be legible?
Ans: The quality of digital printing is only improving day by day and so you don’t have to worry about small fonts. You can use the regular 10 or 12 point font. Avoid using anything lower than 4.
Qs.7 How do I make the black look richer?
Ans: You can use a mixture of CMYK as C-60 M-40 Y-40 and K-100. This is the same formula for offset printing. When you add other colours to black it forces the toner to overload the area with toner or ink. This can be used to make your text pop too, just reduce the black (K) a little.
