One must have a valid Driving License if we are to drive a motor vehicle in any public place. Such a license is issued to a person and thus empowers him/her to drive vehicle in a given type(s). Licenses are of varied categories and are issued by the Regional Transport Offices.

Firstly, an individual must join one of the several driving schools in India (registered with the pertinent traffic authorities) to obtain a Learner Driving License.

This is a temporary license that has a validity of up to 6 months from the date of issue. It is issued with the intent to enable the individual to learn driving of Motor Vehicle. The varied training courses at the Indian driving schools introduces the individual to traffic rules in India, the meaning and interpretation of various traffic indications and road signals on the Indian roads. The fundamental aim of this is to foster appreciation within the new driver of the value and the absolute necessity of Road Safety in India.

The next stage is the issuance of a Permanent Driving License. This is issued to those Individuals who qualify after a period of a month. The Learner must apply for the Permanent Driving License within 180 days from the date of issue of the Learner License. The learner only qualifies for a permanent Driving License once he is well versed with the fundamentals of the vehicle, shows an able and effective control of the vehicle and knows/understands the various traffic rules & regulations.

With the rapid increase of vehicular traffic in almost all the cities and towns of India. The conditions of the Indian Highways and Indian roads has only recently now seen an improvement of some degree. With the rapid increase of heavier traffic; the driving conditions have become much tougher and increasingly more stressful.

Duplicate Licenses are issued by the traffic authorities in case of loss, theft, or in case of mutilation. However, the duplicate license will be valid for the same time period as the previous license.

The various transport authorities issue several types of Driving licenses e.g. Motorcycle License or Two-wheeler License these permit driving of only two-wheeler vehicles like Motorbike, scooter and moped. The Light Motor Vehicle License is permit driving of light vehicles like auto rickshaws, motor car, jeep, taxi, three-wheeler delivery vans, etc. And then the Heavy Motor Vehicle Licenses are issued to drive heavy vehicles like trucks, buses, tourist coaches, cranes, goods carriages, etc.

The conditions of the Indian Highways and Indian roads are only now seeing a tremendous transformation. With the increase of heavier traffic; driving conditions in India have become tougher and stressful. This translates itself in the rapid increase in cases of road rage in India. Traffic authorities are being made sensitive to this change in scenario and they are constantly working on ways to improve road conditions making it easier for the Indian driver.
