Bridezilla

Although I was lucky enough that most of the brides who came to by bridal boutique did not fit this description, the term has become more commonplace recently. I first learned of it from my daughter who was a maid of honor to a childhood friend. The young woman’s mother, observing her behavior on her wedding day, called her daughter, “bridezilla.” She was just putting into words what everyone else was thinking.

Everyone knows that the bride is stressed out before the wedding. Does anyone realize that so are the groom, his parents, the ring bearer, the caterer, and a dozen other people? Maybe the church organist is going through a messy divorce and the photographer has a bad hangover. If there are relatives who dislike each other but are required to attend, they are stressed and uncomfortable as well.

The most important thing, always, is for the bride to show her parents the respect they deserve (whether they are paying for the wedding or not). By honoring her parents, she also honors her brothers and sisters as well as her extended family. And if she honors the groom, it goes without saying she will warmly accommodate his parents and relatives. Choosing to take for granted or berate her attendants (as this young woman did), will end up costing their friendship.

Part of being mature enough to pick a life partner and get married, is accepting that unexpected events are going to happen. You can laugh it off or take it out on the nearest bystander. If you choose to see the humor in it, everyone around you will share in the laughter. They won’t remember the bad food at your wedding, but all the good jokes about the bad food. If you appear mad or frustrated, your guests will be embarrassed and looking for a quick exit. Even if you feel like a “bridezilla” on the inside, act like Cinderella at the ball and everyone will say it was one of their favorite weddings.
