Recreational Vehicles Vs. Travel Trailers
By: eevelle | Posted: 27th August 2010
In the early 1920, we experienced the advent of travel trailers, trailing behind regular vehicles, mainly used for sleeping purposes at night. They have metamorphosed over the years in size, shape and amenities, that some of them are confused with recreational vehicles these days. However, clear cut differences still exist between both of them, though most people view a recreational vehicle as an advanced. For purposes of clarity, let us now explore the major differences between both.
SIZE
A recreational vehicle is usually much larger than a travel trailer. The former contains multiple compartments for different uses while the latter is often fitted with just a sleeping compartment. Most travel trailers can contain a maximum of two person, though the larger ones can contain musing crews, group of friends, tour groups etc.
FITTINGS
Modern day recreational vehicles are equipped with amenities that enable them serve as homes or hotels on the road. They are equipped with bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms with household equipment and utensils.
MOBILITY
One big difference between recreational vehicles and travel trailers is that one is self propelled while the other can only move, if towed by another vehicle. In relation to safety and escape from any form of disaster, the recreational vehicle can find its way faster than the travel trailer.
VARIANTS
The travel trailer and the recreational vehicles can be distinguished by their different variants. Paradoxically, these variants are also a means of confusion for most people. For the former, we can have options which include the really old-school gypsy caravans, fifth wheel trailers and more recent double decked trailers.
FLEXIBILITY
One big advantage that the recreational vehicle in its full resplendence has over the travel trailer is that it can be modified as often as possible. Due to the fact that it is a vehicle with a much larger base, compartments can be added or removed in line with current needs. Also, this is comfortably done as it propels itself. Towing considerations and lack of a base has to be looked into, if additional compartments must be added.
MAINTENANCE
Due to its larger size, multiple compartments and functionality, the "RV" requires greater maintenance costs and time than the travel trailer. This is natural since it serves on a much broader scale.
Finally, it must be noted that they are both viable means of saving on long trips; usage of either of them should be dependent on needs and spend ability.
