Harmony! Washing Machine Spins, Fridge Chills Out
By: David Skul | Posted: 18th December 2005
'An appliance of science', someone said, it does your washing while you're in bed. It swishes and spins as you slumber away whilst your washing is ready when you start your new day. This wonderful machine belongs to a family of white goods. They were mostly white enamel once upon a time though today they can be any shade of green, yellow, white or sky blue or midnight.
The 'White Goods' family, now more popularly referred to as 'Appliances' has grown and swishy has some many helpful allies. 'White Goods' are not necessarily 'white' anymore. Many businesses continue to profile themselves as manufacturers or purveyors of 'White Goods'. Yet the bastions of the domestic appliance world will ask;" I see sir, that's forty widgets that swish and spin sir, will you be taking five of each color, or would you prefer our 'titanium star burst' model for all forty? Really! it's a color to die for. They'll fly out of your store as if they had wings……what's that sir…. Oh no sorry, we don't have a machine with wings……..yet!"
Manufacturers of appliances are diversified purveyors of 'White Goods'. Their primary market place is the same as it was when they were humble producers in the fiercely completive business of White Goods Fashion has so much to do with their business today. In the past they would sell products as much on price as excellence. Now if they have one winner, be it washing machine, refrigerator, cooker or dryer, they can sell the whole set to a fashion conscious buyer.
"Excuse me madam, if you have one minute more we have a plethora of appliances, in matching colors in our store. You see over there, even our blender coordinates with your excellent choice. Blending is what it's all about, discreet, discerning and blending, sophistication; you'll have a kitchen to die for. Oh! Yes of course all of our appliances are triple grounded!"
"Thank you young man, I'd like a toaster and a kettle too, in 'titanium star bust, I can't stand the blue". Deathly silence. Palpable pain. Such an awkward question and he has been asked it again. "I'm so sorry, they don't make small appliances in 'titanium star burst', but the chrome blends in quite well"; Stuttered our young man that is still learning to sell.
"You're such a charming young man and I've learned a lot, can you direct me to the 'White Goods' shop?"
