Make peace with marketing!
By: Lynne Klippel | Posted: 26th August 2007
If I had a nickel for every time someone has said, "I love writing books. Can't I just hire someone to sell them?", I would be rich. If I had a penny for every time I've said those words myself, I would be even richer!
I hate to burst anyone's bubble.... in order to succeed with our books, we MUST market them. If you hate to sell things, see selling as inherently evil, or a task that can be left to chance, it will be impossible to have a successful book.
Sorry to be so blunt.
This is tough love.
Make peace with the idea that when your book is done, you will be required to tell people about it and give them the invitation to buy it. Decide that this task will be fun. Plan a strategy to do it.
You will have worked too hard and spent too much time on your book to not give it the marketing it deserves.
If you don't know how to market your book, that is no reason for shame. This is a new task. No one taught this skill in school.
Ready for some good news?
You can learn to market books. There are classes, books, and coaching programs to help you. Heck, I can coach you on the basics of internet book marketing. Marketing is a learned skill, not an innate talent.
Allow yourself plenty of time to create a buzz about your book. Plan to spend 3-4 years marketing your book gradually. Avoid those claims of creating an overnight best-seller. I've fallen for a couple of them myself. Time and consistent marketing create book sales.
You are not alone. You can market your book. Doing so will grace the world with the important wisdom in your book. That's a worthy endeavor!
