Car insurance – could you receive a “crushing” blow?
By: Chris Rowlands | Posted: 18th January 2008
Each and every year thousands of drivers take to the roads without any form of insurance. As you know car insurance is required by law and any car on the road in the UK must have a minimum of third party cover in place against it.
The British police force has fought a long battle with these offenders and are always thinking up new ways to catch them.
Perhaps the most important advance comes with the introduction of A.N.P.R (automatic number plate recognition) cameras – that as the name suggests can capture the number plate of a vehicle and allow a check to be quickly carried out revealing if an insurance policy is in place.
If a vehicle is found to be on the road without a car insurance policy in place it can be impounded and even crushed if found to be un-roadworthy or after the vehicle being held for a certain period of time.
The Association of British Insurers revealed recently that 100,000 vehicles were seized by Police within the last year alone - of this number 45,000 were crushed.
This is a noticeable increase on the 78,000 vehicles seized last year and thought to be due to the introduction of the new cameras.
Perhaps interestingly – vehicle related crimes were down 4% from last year.
The cost of the average car insurance quote increases every year to take into account the cost of uninsured drivers to the industry. At present this figure stands at £30 on each and every car insurance policy.
It is perhaps the view of those who avoid purchasing an insurance policy that it is cheaper to pay a fine than pay the price for their premium. This is unfortunately a false economy as you could ultimately find yourself appearing before a court if you are involved in an accident.
cheap car insurance is not hard to find if you are willing to spend a little time and effort searching through online insurers. There are now many comparison services that can take away a lot of the legwork and make the whole process that little bit easier.
