During pregnancy women are generally more prone to all manner of side effects. One of the most common is an increased risk for yeast infections during pregnancy. While you are pregnant there is a higher chance of you developing a yeast infection than when you are not. This may result from increased levels of oestrogen circulating in your body. This produces an environment much more suitable to yeast growth in the reproductive tract.

Signs and Symptoms of Yeast Infections During Pregnancy

There are many signs and symptoms of yeast infections that show up during pregnancy. While some may go undetected for a brief period of time, most women will notice the following common symptoms.

1: Itchiness or burning in the Vulva or Labia.

2: Odourless discharge that is white and creamy or something that resembles cottage cheese.

3: Pain on intercourse or lower abdominal pain that comes and goes.

4: Burning or irritation on urinating

Treating yeast infections during pregnancy

It is important that your yeast infection is diagnosed properly before you treat it during pregnancy. You need to be careful because some yeast infections resemble other common infections during pregnancy. A bacterial infection for example can produce abundant discharge much like a yeast infection but the cure for the two are not the same. If you do have a yeast infection your healthcare worker will probably recommend an over the counter anti-fungal cream. These are normally beneficial in treating all but the more serious yeast infections and will normally work within a few days. You may find that you need to take this for a longer period than what you are used to when you are pregnant. If your infection is more serious then a trip to your doctor is recommended. They may well prescribe a stronger product by prescription to help treat the infection more effectively. In most cases yeast infections are relatively harmless and will not have any impact on your developing baby. There is however a small chance that you could pass on a yeast infection to your baby during the delivery if you have an infection during labour.
