There are it has been suggested a lot of deaths related to Vitamin D type deficiencies, Edward Giovannucci suggests that 30 lives are saved by sunbathing for every one lost to skin cancer, though admittedly he does refer to other sources such as vitamins.

Before you get on the beach spend a little time learning about what sort of skin you actually have? If you have sensitive skin then it may be better to use fake tan rather than sunbathing at all!
