You can choose potato chips based on amount of saturated fat, sodium or fiber. Why do these matter? Eating too much saturated fat is bad for your heart and arteries and excess amounts of sodium may raise your blood pressure. On the positive side, you can find potato chips that are high in fiber.

If allergies or additives are a concern, you can use our FoodEssentials database to weed out the brands that contain artificial colors, gluten, MSN or preservatives.

We used the Foodessentials database to compare flavored potato chips to see which brands offer the least saturated fat and sodium and the most fiber.

Saturated Fat:

Kettle Hickory BBQ contains no saturated fat and their Aged White Cheddar and the Genisoy Ranch have small amounts, so these three are your best choices for avoiding saturated fat. Wise Salt and Vinegar and Moore's BBQ are high in saturated fats, both with more than 10 grams saturated fat per 100 grams of chips.

Sodium:

You should keep your sodium intake below 2400 mg per day, less if you have high blood pressure. Kettle Hickory Honey BBQ contains the least sodium, followed by their Aged White Cheddar, Wise Kettle Cracked Pepper and Moore's Honey BBQ. The chips with the most sodium are Organic Kettle Chipotle Chili BBQ, Old Dutch Salt and Vinegar Kettle, and Wise Salt and Vinegar.

Fiber:

If you need your snacks to contain fiber, than the Kettle Hickory Honey BBQ, Kettle Aged White Cheddar, Genisoy Ranch, and Organic Kettle Chipotle Chili BBQ are your best choices for potato chips. All have more than 7 grams fiber per 100 grams of chips.

Colors, Preservatives and Common Allergens:

All of these brands contain preservatives and the usage of colors varies. Some use natural colorings and others use artificial colorings. Some brands and flavors of chips also contain MSG or gluten

And the Winner Is...

The Kettle brand Hickory Honey BBQ chips are lowest in saturated fat and sodium, while being at the top for fiber. They're also a good source of potassium and they contain some vitamin A and iron.
