Wouldn't it be great to never have to go into the office again? The daily commute, the office politics, the distractions from your co-workers - imagine leaving it all behind for a home based work. Working from your house is not as difficult as you might imagine. There are a lot of home based work opportunities out there that are just waiting for you to take advantage of them. Some of them involve working for someone else and some of them make you your own boss, but all of them give you the flexibility associated with working from your house. Of course, home based work is not for everyone. Here are some things you need to consider before making the leap.
First, you need to decide what kind of home based work you will do. Many corporations have work at home programs for their staff and you may be able to do the job you do now from your home, at least part of the time. Even if your company does not have any formal program in place, you may be able to convince them that now is a good time to start. Put together a proposal demonstrating how allowing you to wok from would benefit the company both financially and in terms of overall productivity, and your boss may come around to your side. This kind of home based work is a little more formal than being your own boss. You will still be required to be in the office part of the time; at the very least, you will need to attend staff meetings and performance reviews.
If you want to work from home because you're ready to shake off all of this kind of stuff, then being your own boss is the way to go. You may have a business idea that has been kicking around in your head for years that you want to get off the ground, or you may need a little bit of inspiration. Start by considering your hobbies and talents. You probably have a special interest or ability that you can turn into a nice little earner for yourself.
It all sounds pretty exciting, doesn't it? Well, it is, but now comes the reality check part. Home based work is still work. The only difference is that you have to motivate yourself to get the job done. This is a little easier if you're still technically employed by a company, but if you're the boss, you have to make sure you can tear yourself away from doing the housework, playing with the kids and watching daytime TV and actually get some work done. Developing your own schedule is a challenge, and some people end up finding that working from home actually causes them more stress because of it.
At the end of the day, however, working from home gives you a control over your life that you just can't get from a 9 to 5 job. It takes commitment and elbow grease, but if you can pull it off, you may find life is significantly more enjoyable.
