Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two major cities in the north and south of Vietnam, are bursting with vitality - there's a spirit of optimism in the still communist-governed country. A young population hungry for success has seen a rapid rise in per capita income. Ideal conditions for Metro.The German wholesaler went to Vietnam six years ago and now runs eight supermarkets. 90,000 restaurant owners, traders and retailers regularly shop at Metro. The stores are supplied by local farmers who are shown by the German firm how to grow vegetables without pesticides, in many cases almost doubling their income. Manuela Kasper-Claridge reports from Ho Chi Minh City and Dalat, Vietnam's central mountain region, which supplies Metro with most of its fruits and vegetables.
