KUJH-TV News: Winterize your vehicle

Bookmark and Share
As the temperature quickly drops, it is easy remember to take care of ourselves. We bundle up in our coats, put on our gloves and turn on the heat. Although often overlooked, it is also important to prepare your car for the cold winter months. Here are some tips to remember when preparing your car for the icy road conditions:
have your battery checked, properly inflate your tires to maintain traction in icy conditions and be sure to replace any worn tires that have little tread remaining.

In addition to checking your tires and battery, make sure to buy a few supplies at your local auto-parts store. Sub-zero washer fluid and new windshield wipers and an ice scraper will help get to get that pesky ice off of the windshield and windows. And make sure to buy some anti-freeze to protect your engine.

AutoZone Store Manager, Will Fritzler stresses the importance of winter car maintenance. "You can freeze an engine up, if you don't put antifreeze in it. It can break a block and it will be several thousand dollars to replace an engine," Fritzler said. "If the fuel lines freeze up, you'll have the have the car towed, put it into a heated garage so it can unfreeze and then get the fuel treated so the water is out of it."

Make sure to follow all of these tips to prevent costly repairs down the road and make sure to warm up your vehicle before you begin driving in freezing temperatures.
