A successful scholarship scheme which aims to increase the number of Welsh speakers to follow a career in the police force is being extended by North Wales Police and Bangor University .

For the first time, a further scholarship is being offered aimed at people of all age groups who have an interest in studying a BA degree in Sociology and Social Policy through the medium of Welsh.

The successful applicant will receive an annual £1,000 scholarship for three years. They will also be offered the opportunity to undertake a six week work placement with North Wales Police.

This new venture extends the partnership established two years ago with Bangor University's School of Social Sciences, with a scholarship being offered to 6th form students across Wales.

Chief Inspector Ray Hughes, Head of the force's Welsh Language Services said: "North Wales Police are very eager to increase the number of staff with good quality written and spoken Welsh.

"The aim of the joint project is to increase the number of students following a higher education degree through Welsh, who can then consider a career with the police on graduating.

"According to the terms of the Welsh Language Act 1993, we, as a public body, are duty bound to provide bilingual services. As a major employer in North Wales we also acknowledge our responsibility to promote projects that widen participation of groups by providing new opportunities in the Welsh language."

Gwenda Rhian, Admissions Tutor for the degree at the School of Social Policy said: "The work placement is a great opportunity to experience how an emergency service operates, and to learn more about the varied challenging, and satisfying career opportunities that are available."

The University and Police are inviting anyone interested in the Scholarships to attend one of three meetings to find out more about the project. The meetings are to be held on the following dates:

• Wednesday 4th June between 6pm and 7:30pm - Room S5 (Second floor), College of Education & Lifelong Learning, Bangor University, Dean St, Bangor.

• Tuesday 10th June between 6pm and 7:30pm - Room D17, Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Ffordd Ty'n Coed, Dolgellau

• Wednesday 18th June between 6pm and 7:30pm - Llys Clwyd, Lon Parcwr Industrial Estate, Rhuthin, Denbighshire
Notes:

• The original scholarship scheme was launched at the University in September 2006.
• Four scholarships are offered every year by North Wales Police, each being worth £1,000 a year for three years.
• This new scheme is extended to people of all age groups who are interested in developing a career with North Wales Police.
