HANGING MARY
A new play by Matthew Carlton
Directed by Jon Royal
A World Premiere production.
"Sept. 13, 1916, in Erwin, Tennessee, an elephant was hanged for murder." So begins the world premiere of this completely true story drawn from the dark annals of our state's history. This locally written work recreates the tragic, ridiculous, and utterly unbelievable facts that led to the execution of Mary, a 5-ton circus elephant, in this gripping look at our society's difficult relationship with crime and punishment.
March 8-17 at the Belcourt Theatre.
