Here's a comparison of the stock incandescent CHMSL with a LED capsule that replaces the original 912 incandescent bulb. The camera settings and position were kept the same throughout the experiment. Notice that the LED retrofit reduces the light output but has much faster turn-on and shut-off times. If you see a 2005-2009 Mustang on the road, the stock CHMSL is usually very dim during broad daylight. The CHMSL assembly relies on a single bulb emitting light through an array that disperses the light.
Another option is to purchase an aftermarket multiple-LED CHMSL, but the main drawback is that you must resort to a clear or smoked lens and the LED's remain dimly lit when off due to the way the smart junction box is designed. A load resistor can eliminate this phenomenon but creates a potential fire hazard. With a single LED retrofit capsule, it does stay dimly lit due to the same SJB design issue, but it isn't visible even in the dark. This phenomenon will not drain your battery because it draws microamps of current for up to 20 minutes after you lock the doors.
The 2010 Mustang will feature multiple LEDs for its CHMSL (as well as sequential LED tail lights) which will be a remarkable improvement over the standard incandescent CHMSL used on the 2005-2009 Mustangs.
