About Deer-Vehicle-Accidents, it goes something like this:
1. Of the 300 million Americans, about 5% hunt, or about 15 million hunters, most of whom want one or more deer. Therefore, millions of deer are needed every year ro satisfy these hunters' appetite, and therefore, the deer population is artificially cultivated by means of food-plots to overpopulation levels from coast to coast.
2. This artificially generated and sustained population, combined with the known amount of vehicle-miles on American highway, WILL produced so many DVAs per year (about 1.5 million last count), with so many human fatalities (several hundred a year).
3. The hunters then blame the deer for the DVAs and human fatalities, and gain general acceptance by the ill-informed public for hunting being a "public safety" measure.
4. Further, ask any major insurance company which day of the year has the highest DVA rates and they'll tell you that it is the first day of the deer hunting season, when hunters flush deer into roadways. So, hunters causes even more DVAs DIRECTLY.
5. Those who artificially overblow the deer population know, or should know, that this will cause more human highway deaths. Yet they press on with their "program", considering the casualties as collateral damage.
I consider this premeditated murder.

DVA have increased significantly in North America since 1980 (Romin and Bissonette 1996). Williamson (1980) reported that 200,000 deer were killed from DVA in the U.S. in 1980. Romin and Bissonette (1996) estimated that more than 538,000 deer were killed in the U.S. by vehicles in 1991. This estimate must be considered conservative since numerous DVA are not reported, and included DVA data from only 36 states (Lehnert and Bissonette 1997). Conover et al. (1995) reports that an estimated 1.5 million DVA occur annually in the U.S., and only 50% of DVA are reported or documented (Decker et al. 1990, Romin 1994). Conover et al. (1995) estimated that DVA in the U.S. annually result in 211 human fatalities, 29,000 human injuries, and more than $1 billion in property damage. Danielson and Hubbard (1998) estimate combined annual economic loss in the U.S. from DVA at more than $2 billion from human and animal casualties and property damage."

Ontario Ministry of Transportation: Deer Hunting Causes Car Collisions
April 25, 2005, Toronto: An Ontario Ministry of Transportation report released last year cites deer hunting as a major cause of car collisions in Ontario. The report states that "in Ontario, higher numbers of animal-vehicle collisions were found to occur in October-December. This could be attributed to fall hunting seasons (Sept.20-Dec15), where people chase and force animals into rights of way. When animals are being shot at, they run and may venture onto highways."
The report also confirms that most wild animal collisions occur during early morning (5am-7am) or after sunset (5pm-11pm). Deer hunting is permitted one half hour before sunrise and one half hour after sunset. These are the times sport hunters are also most active.
