Stress is linked to obesity. Researchers studying mice have shown that stressed mice gain more weight. It is believed that stress causes the brain to release a hormone that causes fat cells to grow in number and size. The good news is that the pathway can be blocked and may lead to a treatment for obesity.

Good news and bad news for dieters. Weight loss programs that use counselling result in a 6% reduction is weight by 1 year. Most, however, will regain the weight back by 5 years. Short-term weight loss has important benefits to blood pressure and cholesterol.

From Cleveland

A new blood test may tell you if you are at high risk for developing heart disease. Researchers have shown that MPO- a protein released by white blood cells, signalling inflammation- is associated with heart disease and stroke.

And finally from Italy

Add sore throats and cavities to the list of things that wine can help cure. According to Italian researchers wine is an anti-microbial agent and is effective against several strains of streptococcus. And similar to cardiac prevention, red wine is better than white.
