ADVENTURES IN BONSAI-PART 5-TRIMMING A SERISSA
The Serissa (Serissa foetida syn. Serissa japonica), is a great little plant for bonsai. It flowers for most of the year with tiny white and sometimes pink flowers. It is extremely easy to propagate through cuttings. Just take a cleanly cut branch and stick it in sphagnum moss and it should grow easily. It takes very well to pruning and can fill out quite nicely when pruned frequenly.
This particular specimen had a wild and unkempt look to it. I saw a flow of branches and decided to go with that flow and clip off those branches growing in the directions that opposed the plans I had. By the end, it had the basic structure I was looking for, and now in the next couple of weeks it should fill in nicely.(May, 2008- showing traditional bonsai at the Morikami Museum.
