Recently Jessica Posted this: June 29, 2006 was the day that changed my life. I had an accident with a tractor trailer, in which I ended up underneath of, with the roof of my car completely sheared off. I spent 3 months in the hospital. My injuries included: basal skull fractures, injury to my temporal lobe, C-7 broke, broken jaw in three places, bleeding in the brain, brachial plexus injury, left ribs broken, a collapsed lung, I also suffered a stroke and was in an induced coma for one month. I had no health insurance. I have fully recovered from the accident with the exception of my left arm, I have no movement in it. My arm has been in a sling for the last 2 yrs. The injury is called a "brachial plexus injury", which is rare and normally occurs in infants.
Considering this injury was not life threatening and I was in such bad shape it was never addressed. In turn, I was going through it alone, trying desperately to find my hope that one day, my left arm will move again. This morning I received it. It was the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and they wanted to set up an appointment. I cannot describe my feelings. I can finally see an end to this road I have been traveling for so long. I have no words to describe this feeling.
The extent of this surgery is unknown, I can not even begin to imagine the hill I am about to climb. I need help, I owe hundreds of thousands already, it was expensive to stay alive. Though this assessment/surgery is worth every penny I do not have any to give. There is no price tag that can be put on an arm, but I am a 21-year-old student and I just can not afford it. I know my family would go bankrupt for me, but they do not have this to give and I know it hurts their hearts. I cannot begin to imagine how costly this will all be. The flights back and forth to Minnesota, the tests I must receive , a place to stay, the surgery itself, physical therapy, the list goes on.
Many of you have been so kind, telling me, if I need anything to ask. I am asking now. PLEASE, help me. I want this surgery so bad; I want to be able to give a two armed hug again, so simple yet more important to me than anyone will ever realize. I would be so grateful for anything you could give.
