Special Election - February 24th
Ballot Question, Shall the Town of Newington adopt the proposed charter that was approved by the Town Council on January 12, 2009, which includes a 3% Tax Cap, a budget referendum and an education circuit breaker? Yes or No
The fundamental change to the charter will give you the voter the right to vote on future town budgets which have a proposed property tax increase of 3% or more.
How did we get to the point of changing the charter and the way future budgets in the Town of Newington are approved?
From tax year 2000 to 2007, the average property tax on Newington homes increased by 60.5% or an average of 8.6% per year, under one political partys control.
If you believe you should have the right to vote on large tax increases, then vote YES on Feb. 24th, or if you believe 9 politicians on the Town Council should keep the power to raise your taxes without the votersapproval, then vote no.
The new charter will give you the right to vote on any Newington property tax increase greater than 3% and if the people do not support a tax increase greater than 3%, after 2 budget referendums, then taxes will be capped at 3%.
Please vote YES on Feb. 24th to empower the people! If you support the passage of the new town charter and want to assist its passage by volunteering, to make a donation, need an absentee ballot, ride to polls, or Vote YES! sign, please contact the Chairman of the Newington Budget Referendum Advocates PAC newingtonbudget@yahoo.com
