Lehenga is a traditional wear of Indian women since time immemorial. Popular both among wanderers, tribals as well the as rich and royalty of old time, the lehengas had many different styles. The tribals preferred lehenga in ordinary cotton fabric with as many as eighty panels with rich embroidery and mirror work. Where as the royals went for brocade, tanchoi and heavy satins with layers of real gold and silver embroidery, studded with precious stones. The length of tribal lehenga varied from knee to ankle whereas those of the well heeled would always sweep the floor as they moved. Women of the Gujarat and Rajasthan countryside may also wear the lehenga with a choli, a blouse. Their cholis are often loosely fitting and heavily ornamented with embroidery and mirror work, or shisha embroidery. A choli is a midriff baring blouse worn in countries where the sari is worn. The choli is usually cut to fit tightly to the body, it will have short sleeves and a low neck. The back may be solid, or cut out. The choli may also be short, ending right below the bustline, or elongated, ending at the waist. The choli may be sewn so that the elaborately woven borders of the sari material form the bottom edges of the choli sleeves. However, cholis need not match the sari. There is a growing trend towards stretchy, comfortable cholis made from knit materials.The lehenga choli comes as a set. In India, women wear these apparel both for formal and informal occasions.
