Hi, I'm Dana Ward with the Get the Daily.com here with your sports update.
Tiger Woods had surgery yesterday to repair torn cartilage in his knee. The operation marks the second time that Woods' knee has gone under the knife in five years and is expected to cost him 4 weeks . The news comes right after Woods' winning streak of 8 straight events from last September until March. Woods had also won the PGA Championship, his 13th Major, last August and serious talk had begun regarding Woods' ability to go undefeated for a full year. Doctors and sports analysts expect a full recovery and note that Tiger was victorious in 30 events and 5 majors. Woods is expected to be ready for the next major, the US Open, but will likely miss the Players Championship.
A man died following last night's Mets game after he fell 2 stories off an escalator. Antonio Nar-arain-sami, 36, lost his footing and plummeted onto the cement below. His cousin, who attended the game with him, said that Nar-arain-sami was walking down the escalator, which was broken and not moving, when he lost his balance and fell. Police and team officials commented that investigations are on-going but that no foul play is suspected at this time. Nar-arain-sami was an avid sports fan who leaves behind a pregnant wife and three children. His death marks the 2nd fatality at Shea Stadium after a 21- year old man from Yonkers fell off an escalator in 1985. The Mets are moving from Shea Stadium to a new Stadium, Citi Field, next year.
The NBA playoff picture became clearer after last night's penultimate regular season games. The Lakers secured the Western Conference regular season championship and top playoff spot in the West after beating the Kings 124-101. The Hornets will be number 2, and won their first division title in franchise history. With one night left in the regular season, the Spurs, Jazz, Rockets, Suns, Mavericks, and Nuggets are in, but their exact seeding order will be decided after tonight. In the East, Boston has taken the number 1 seed with Detroit right behind them. The seeds and teams in the East have both been locked in, and the first round pairing will be Celtics-Hawks, Pistons-Sixers, Magic-Raptors, Cavs-Wizards. The NBA playoffs are a four round tournament with each round being best of seven. This year's post season tournament will start on April 19th.
