This was my second game created using the Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset, during the third year of Games Design BSc at The University of Bolton. I designed the level, scripted (code) and wrote the dialog for the game.
Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson
In A Case of Torment
The idea was to make a murder mystery style game based loosely around the Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson theme.
Within the game, the player investigates and talks to various residents of the mansion gathering clues in their investigation journal. In addition, the second player character (Dr Watson) also maintains his investigation notes. These notes can be viewed whenever the player interacts with Dr Watson. Finally, the main challenge was to create a quality gameplay experience without the need for NPC combat, which NWN2 heavily relies on.
A walk through is below, however, I've not added the dialog as it's quite lengthy.
WALKTHROUGH
After the opening sequence talk to Watson (right-click, talk to), also check the main journal, and then head into the mansion.
Once inside speak to the butler and follow him. He will unlock the murder room. Once he has returned to the lobby you can speak to him again, for extra supplementary conversation.
Examine the body on the floor. Also, if you examine the body again, it will say you already have. Now speak to Watson and note the journal updates.
If you speak to Watson again, choose the option 'Watson's Investigation Notes'. This will allow you to view his current notes of the investigation.
Move to the dining hall and speak to the barman Grady. Next walk to the kitchen door and watch the short cut scene.
Go back to Grady and speak to him. Follow him to the kitchen door and wait for him to unlock it. Note the journal updates. Once he has returned to the bar you can speak to him again, for extra supplementary conversation.
Enter the kitchen and speak the Vincent the chef. Note the journal updates.
Now talk to Watson and choose the option 'Watson's Investigation Notes'. This will allow you to view his updated notes of the investigation.
Head back and speak the butler Arthur in the lobby. Follow him as he will unlock the 2nd floor. Now enter the second floor.
Once on the second floor investigate the 1st room on the left, all 3 objects (candlestick, fireplace & wooden logs) should read out a description, but do nothing.
Now head up the hall and enter the last room on the right. Speak to Alisha. Once she has finished you may speak to her again, for extra supplementary conversation. Note the journal updates.
Now talk to Watson and choose the option 'Watson's Investigation Notes'. This will allow you to view his updated notes of the investigation.
Head back to the room with the 3 objects (candlestick, fireplace & wooden logs). First pickup a wooden log, then light it in the fireplace. Finally, ignite the candle and pickup the 'spawned' ring to the left of the candle stick. Note the journal updates.
Note the ring is in the player's inventory and head back to Alisha. Speak to her and receive the garden key. Note the journal updates.
Now talk to Watson and choose the option 'Watson's Investigation Notes'. This will allow you to view his updated notes of the investigation.
Head back the first floor and speak the butler for extra supplementary conversation that will provide the player with help (if needed).
On route the garden visit the chef Vincent and speak to him. He will then leave the kitchen as he is removed from the investigation.
Also while on route the garden speak to the barman Grady. He will then leave the room as he is also removed from the investigation.
Now go through the door next to the bar, and as long as you have the garden key in your inventory the garden door will be unlocked.
Once in the garden speak to Glyn the head gardener. Watch him dig up the chest near the door. Now open the chest and take out the human skull. Speak to Glyn again. Note the journal updates.
Now talk to Watson and choose the option 'Watson's Investigation Notes'. This will allow you to view his updated notes of the investigation.
Next head back to the murder room the library. Walk around the library and find the bookcase that is selectable. Click on it, and watch the cut scene. Note the journal updates. And the metal book in the player's inventory. Open the hidden door and head into the basement.
Find the lever just near the door to open the iron portcullis. Head into the basement and watch the cut scene. Now find the book on the desk under the hanging man and click on it. Note the journal updates.
Now talk to Watson and choose the option 'Watson's Investigation Notes'. This will allow you to view his updated notes of the investigation.
Now the case is solved, head out of the basement and enjoy the end sequence. Note the twist at the end of the scene.
