BROCKTON — A $1,980 traffic signal control box at the center of a scrap metal theft case was scrapped again by the city after officials re claimed it.
"We found it was aluminum worth 50 cents a pound, and so it was weighed and cashed in for $68," said Lt. Edward Williams, a city fire investigator.
Peter Tupper, the city's assistant superintendent of fire alarms, cashed in the box as scrap metal at Eco Recycling Systems Inc. at 195 Mulberry St., Williams said.
Tupper will turn the cash over to the Traffic Commission, Williams said.
It was the second time the box was sent to the scrap heap.
A city man was charged earlier this week with stealing the control box from the Central Fire Station parking lot at 42 Pleasant St. Tues day afternoon.
Police charged Erik Alton Grahn, 25, of 59 Fuller St., Brockton, with larceny over $250 and trespassing with a motor vehicle.
Grahn received $11 in cash for the initial transaction, police said. The city received more cash for the box after it was found to be made of aluminum, officials said.
Lt. John Crowley said not saving the box as evidence may not be detri mental to the case.
The BCI unit of the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department took photographs of the box, police said.
