Fishermen Survive in Eski

Bookmark and Share
They have been drifting for 25 days.. with no safety equipment, no beacons, and no means of communication.

The two men were part of an 18 man crew on a Thai fishing boat, which went missing on the 23rd of December.

They were spotted by an Australian coastal patrol aircraft on the 17th of January and brought to safety by a  rescue helicopter.

[Terry Gadenne, Rescue Pilot]:
"Once they saw that we were going to rescue them and we set up to winch them out one of the guys jumped out of the eski and swam to the winch man in the water."

[Ric Gordon, Doctor]:
"The human body can last up to two months without food, but doesn't last very long without water."

Techni Ice makes the ice boxes that the pair managed to stay afloat in.

[Graeme Reberger, Director, Techni Ice]:
"I'm just surprised that they were able to stay in it without it tipping over."

It was unclear where the Thai-based fishing boat sank and how far the pair had drifted.

Rescuers say the rest of the crew would most likely have perished.
