GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Volvo has announced that it is presenting new economical diesel variants of the C30, S40 and V50 in October at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The models are based on the Volvo C30 Efficiency that was unveiled a year ago in Frankfurt.

The 1.6D DRIVe vehicles achieve optimal efficiency with reduced air resistance, higher gear ratios and a more efficient driveline. Specifically, the cars will ride 0.4 inch lower and feature new aerodynamic panels as well as lower-friction transmission oil.

The S40 and V50 with the 1.6-liter diesel engine will achieve fuel economy that is the equivalent of 52 mpg, while the compact C30 will get 53 mpg, Volvo says.

"Taken together, all the small adjustments have helped us achieve our aim [of] emissions below 120 g/km for all three carswithout in any way compromising driving properties or comfort," said Magnus Jonsson, Volvo Cars senior vice-president of research and development.

Volvo expects to sell 20,000 of the 1.6D DRIVe units next year in Europe, with France, Sweden and Spain accounting for most of the sales. The package will cost the equivalent of $200 to $630 depending on the model, and will be available before the end of 2008—but not in the U.S.
