Dear Friends and Colleagues,
My name is Rachel Casas, and I am running for Chair-Elect of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS). Elections are currently underway, and I am asking for your support. I firmly believe that as graduate students, we are the pioneers of the future of Psychology. Collectively, we have the power to shape the direction and vision of our field by bringing a new generation of leadership to the forefront of the profession, one that is committed to promoting diversity and social justice through excellence in research and clinical expertise. As Chair-Elect of APAGS, I would work diligently on your behalf to:
Forge collaborative relationships with APA boards and committees to advocate for graduate student issues including internship supply and demand, decreasing student loan debt, and increasing funding for dissertation research
Unite graduate students across research and practice specialties of psychology to strengthen our representation within the APA and reinforce the interdisciplinary nature of our work
Talk regularly with APAGS members to remain well-informed about our multiplicity of needs
Utilize opportunities to promote diversity and social justice throughout all APAGS activities by developing an APAGS position statement on human rights and writing quarterly updates on APAGS efforts to enhance diversity
Respond and react to legislative initiatives that impact graduate students such as changes in licensure requirements and NIH funding cuts
Encourage more opportunities for student involvement within APAGS by creating student working groups to collaborate with elected leaders and soliciting student article contributions for the APAGS website
Advocacy and activism are at the core of my personal and professional endeavors. For the past three years I have served as a Regional Diversity Coordinator and Chair of the APAGS Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA). I have also been an APAGS ambassador, an active member of Division 40, Neuropsychology, and a liaison to Division 45, Ethnic Minority Issues. It would be both an honor and a privilege to continue to serve you.
Please cast your vote and have your voice heard at: http://apacustomout.apa.org/APAGSElection/default.aspx.
