Project title: Amazing Phage - talks and exhibits showing the UK's role in international biomedical science and history, alongside other methods of treating superbug infections - 36 months - £30,000.

Grace Filby presents the health value of bacteriiophages in illustrated talks, videos, slide shows and table top exhibitions, resulting from overseas travel to key locations visiting many microbiologists and physicians with expertise in this little-known field of medicine. As a Churchill Fellow, she knows patients and has access to archives.

A science communicator with many years' experience in classrooms, with groups and individuals of all ages and abilities, also as an educational publisher, history editor, arts consultant, health spokesperson and writer, Grace carefully prepares each speaking event to ensure that her presentations are tailor-made for the needs and interests of specific audiences. She uses IT/graphics skills to create mini-videos for those with a short attention span, and applies psychological techniques that appeal to different learning styles (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic). She has educational gimmicks and an inspiring, lively approach to this serious, complex and much-neglected subject.

Her associates help to provide a wealth of resources including poems, artwork, historic references, artefacts and copies of rare books. She, personally, is a Reader at The Wellcome Library, including the Rare Materials Room. The Wellcome Collection at the Science Museum has just ONE item on the subject, also introducing pioneering phage technology online.

Having met these scientists at international conferences in England and Scotland (and Poland, Canada and USA), Grace possesses the necessary skills and vocation to introduce this science to the British public, to help solve the superbug and public health crisis in practical and economnical ways.

Intended audiences:

Churchill Associations, Probus Clubs, Rotary groups, Schools and colleges, church groups, Hospital Friends, National Science & Engineering Week 2009, 2010, 2011, Cabinet War Room.
