Kindle 2: Reading Revolution?

Bookmark and Share
Lately its not unusual to see new, developing technologies overshadowing the old. Now with the launch of e-book reader Kindle 2, some are questioning the practicality of the device. (CNET.com)

Hello Im Charlotte Bellis and youre watching Newsy.com.

The Kindle is a portable device from Amazon.com, which allows you to read electronic books on the go.

FOX News reports on the increasing popularity of the gadget.

I did an informal poll last night on Facebook and Twitter among our viewers, and hundreds of people said that they want to buy this product. (FOX News)

NBC takes a look at the cost of the new technology. It questions Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos (bay-zos) about the steep price.

I think it is a must-own for people who read. If you are a reader, if you like to read newspapers and magazines, this makes it much more convenient. (Even if its going to cost you $350 to get this when you can just go out and buy a book?) Even though its going to cost $359 to get this, the books are $9.99; you can actually save money over time using this device. (NBC)

The New York Times takes another perspective on whether or not its worth the price tag.

An e-book reader is a delicate piece of electronics. It can be lost, dropped or fried in the tub. Youd have to buy an awful lot of $10 best sellers to recoup the purchase price. If Amazon goes under or abandons the Kindle, you lose your entire library. And you cant pass on or sell an e-book after youve read it. (The New York Times)

However, tech website ZDNet looks at how the product stacks up next to similar technologies...

Really, if you compare the product with especially products that may cost less than $359, and if you look at the iPod touch, the iPhone all the apps to go with it, you know, just the sort of touchscreen and being able to slide your finger across the screen. Thats really attractive. I dont know, Kindle seems like a great product but really, I just think it needs to do more. (so maybe theyll fix these issues on version 3) I think version 3 may just be an iPhone app. (ZDNet)

On Bloomberg.com, columnist David Pauly reminisces about what the Kindle 2 wont give you.

Theres something about holding a book on your lap or folding the newspaper in fourths like a commuter. I probably would even miss getting newsprint on my fingers. (Bloomberg)

In The Wall Street Journal, the creator of Shortcovers, another application which allows people to read electronic books.... explains why this technology appeals to so many in this high-tech industry

They are reading in shorter bursts, with higher frequency... One eye is busy reading while the other eye is looking for... context and relevance. (The Wall Street Journal)

So do you think Kindle-2 is worth its price? Do you think it will encourage reading or take away from the experience?
