The only way to stay debt free is to eliminate your sources of debt. Between the money I made from my own business (www.gcmstudio.com) and tax return, both my wife and I paid off all our debts. We have reduced our cost of living significantly by doing this and guess what? We can afford MORE luxuries because we have no credit. This little video is in celebration of paying off the last $8 of my American Express account just moments before shooting it.
What we did was forgot about my money and her money. We picked the account with the lowest balance and paid it with some money I made from my studio work. That freed up the money to pay off another credit account. We're using our tax return to insulate our house better to further save money and have enough left to pay for future tuition to avoid future debt. I will note, though, the mess I had to clean afterwards was an undertaking (including cleaning the air of my house), it was SO WORTH IT!
