How to Change Your Own Oil (and bonus features!)

Bookmark and Share
This started out as a (relatively serious) guide to help you change your vehicle's oil instead of leaving it in the hands of a place like Iffy Lube.

You will need your vehicle owner's manual or service literature to know how much oil to put in, a wrench that fits your pan plug, oil, an appropriate oil filter, some way to PROPERLY dispose of your old oil, patience, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, common sense and the time to do the change.

CAUTION: Yes, I said common sense. Working under a vehicle can be dangerous. Never, ever get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. If you have to lift your vehicle to get under it, do so safely or just pay to have your oil changed.

Used oil is a carcinogen, so don't let it sit on your skin for a long time. Wash it off with soap and water. Your engine oil may be hot when you go to drain it and it could burn you!

And don't be stupid--if something here doesn't apply to your vehicle, or you become unsure of what to do next, just stop and get help before you damage something.

By the time I got to the oil filter, it would NOT come off for anything and my oil filter wrench was nowhere to be found. I finally bought one out of desperation.

This video also features a bonus trip to another farm, where the Keykeeper and I start one tractor for your viewing pleasure.

Enjoy. Sorry for the long description.
