Build a Locost 7: First Engine Start

Bookmark and Share
A HUGE day! :-D

If you're watching the "Build a Locost 7" series, note that this video is way out of sequence, but I just couldn't wait to post it.

First crank doesn't even have fuel in the tank...just testing the electrics. I then pulled the spark plugs, shot a little Mystery Oil in the cylinders. I cranked for 30+ seconds to get the oil system fully primed and everything nice and juicy inside.

Then I messed around for a long time figuring out why the fuel pump wouldn't pump fuel. Turns out I was missing the fuel pump's ground. I also was missing the ground for the air flow meter on the intake, thus disabling the fuel pump.

It took an embarrassingly long time to realize that I never put the plug wires back on. Amazing what a little ignition does for combustion.

Then, when I got all the wiring squared away, it still wouldn't run for long. I think the problem was a couple of missing vacuum hoses, which meant the air flow meter wasn't opening at idle. Maybe not, but after plugging them up, it started running a lot better.

In the last run on this video, I threw it into first gear, and took great delight at seeing the wheels turning. Pity you can't actually see it in the video...it was a glorious sight to behold! Kind of inspires me to go ahead and install the clutch plumbing. ;-)

And the coolant plumbing.

And the brake lines.

Oh, maybe a steering wheel.

Seat belts can wait, I think.

Lights aren't so critical in the day... ;-)
