Its not often politicians make unpopular announcements, but we will vote against Kevin Rudds $42 billion stimulus package.
We believe its too big at this time.
Its going to leave us with $70 billion of debt and hes seeking permission to borrow $200 billion. Now that debt is going to have to be paid off by our children in high taxes in the future.
Its important that we respond to the economic challenges calmly, rationally and effectively.
Its important our response creates jobs and that is why weve proposed an alternative which would cost half as much, create half as much debt, create jobs, and bring forward tax cuts instead of having a cash splash. The cash splash in December didnt create any jobs why would a cash splash in March do any better?
We want results. We need money to be spent wisely. We want jobs to be created and we do not want to leave our children with hundreds of billions of dollars of debt into the future.
We know this is unpopular. We know that many people will be unhappy. But we are standing up for good government, sound financial management and above all our childrens future.
