People have been dealing with all manner of pains for countless centuries; the knights of the crusades probably had to deal being saddle sore long before they ever got to the Holy Land. Over the years, herbal remedies, acupuncture, and finally modern medicine has sought to ease those aches and pains. Some people might dismiss such troubles as a minor inconvenience. Yet, after the common cold, headaches and migraines are the number one complaint of patients going to see a doctor.

So, why use a soft or low level laser to deal with pain? After all, with all the other treatments out there, what is so special about lasers? Well, a lot of those other treatments have negatives aspects to them. First off, anything you ingest into your body is going to have some effects not connected with treating your pain; the so-called "side effects". Some are mild, some are severe, and some are quite debilitating! How often have we heard in the news of someone becoming addicted to a powerful painkiller? Then, beyond the immediate negative effects and chance of dependency, there are the long term cumulative effects. Here again, how many times have we heard of athletes suffering brittle bones, liver and/or kidney diseases because of the pain medications they took over the course of their careers? Now, granted, they are an extreme example, but the point is the same: you do not want to be taking medicine for your entire life just to treat pain!

What about alternatives? There are massage and thermal wraps (to name only two), and acupuncture. According to Eastern medicine, the placement of needles at certain keys points on the body can ease pain, reduce swelling, and so on. Yet, each of those has their negative aspects as well. Any time of massage or thermal treatment causes your tissues to heat up. While a means of relief, your body can not be subjected to such things for long. Therefore, treatments must be short, and not too frequent. With acupuncture, you have the needles being stuck in your body. Some people do not much care for that, and there is the whole issue of it being so invasive.

With lasers, all of those issues are put aside. First off, there are no adverse side effects; the laser is a narrow beam of focused light aimed at a specific spot on your body. Second, with a cold and/or low level laser, no thermal reaction takes place; your body remains cool! (Well, at normal body temperature). The laser does the same thing as the acupuncture needle, but without piercing your skin; it stimulates your body to help heal itself. By focusing on nerves and tissues, the laser causes your body to produce endorphins, to boost your serotonin levels, and increase blood flow. The endorphins act a calming agent, a stress reducer, and a natural anesthetic. Lack of good, solid sleep is a major cause of pain; so just these effects can help you. In the case of serotonin, it is part of your body's natural mood control. Too little in your bloodstream, and you get depressed. Thus, the laser treatments can help to restore your body's level, and ease any negative feelings you are having. As doctors have found, a positive mental attitude is key to good health. So, look into laser treatments is you're troubled with pain; it'll be the best health investment you make.
